The Pilgrimage by Paulo Coelho
Paulo Coelho is one of those writers that intellectuals can be a bit sneery about, because he writes these very wide-eyed books about spiritual adventures and everything is always a metaphor for some kind of spiritual discovery or philosophy. And he's also quite religious in places. But I was recommended the book - by Jesse, actually - and I really enjoyed it.
It's a very interesting read. It's based on Coelho going on this journey where he wants to become part of some kind of spiritual brotherhood. The book starts with him failing his initiation test to get into this brotherhood, then in order to make up for this failure, he's sent on a pilgrimage through Spain. He and his guide, who's also in the brotherhood, have to walk hundreds of miles through the mountains, and all along the way there are these tests that he has to do. Each challenge takes up a chapter of the book. There's one where he has to pretend that he's being buried alive, so that he experiences what it's like to face your death. Then there's another where he has to pretend that everything is happening much more slowly than it is, in order that he loses the sense of time. By facing all these challenges, he's trying to attain some kind of particular spiritual purity, wisdom and power
It's not the sort of thing I've ever read before, but I loved it. It does make you think about the way you live your own life. And I felt that I actually learned a lot from it. Coelho will have achieved something at the end of each chapter, and learned things about himself that are really fundamental and important to him on his journey. It's nice to be able to flick back through the pages and think about what did he did, what he said, and what the thought process was that he went through. And it is amazing how much you find yourself identifying with the character.
The book left me with a sense of wanting to try to apply some of those crazy adventures to my own life. We're all slaves to the same obsessions and limitations and fears and dreams and so on. There are all these common threads that link pretty much every person on the planet and a lot of them are talked about in this book. That makes it feel quite universal. So, it's really, really interesting and very inspiring. One of those books which makes you feel that you could potentially be a better person.

Hey Tim: I have a suggestion: Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. Also, and most importantly, please see the author's speech about the creative procces of artists and the "genious" of it. I think every contemporary artist should see it. Please! Do watch it. http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100324/viral-video-eat-pray-love-plus-eli zabeth-gilberts-doomed-ted-speech/#
In my case I read books I always remember them with any song in particular that esuchar music then and I remember this book for a composition of a folk group Luar na lubre, transports you to these wonderful places galicia, I hope you like it, good night. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MO7bUhJlAek&feature=related
I love Paulo Coelho's books!!! My favorite is The Alchemist!!
This Year of St James, I´ll make my way to Santiago de Compostela.........
I read it a long time ago, and i loved it. In fact, i thin it's a book you always want to re-read.
Tim got it. Indeed, this book deals with the spiritual without falling entirely into religion. It is about enjoying the journey of life through those simple experiences that pass us by, with which we could greatly enrich our lives but that we almost always fail to notice. It might certainly challenge you to be a better person and a more driven one. It is about getting to know your personal enemy, to face your fears and make sense of your own purpose in life. Helpful and hopefully not too moralizing.
Hello, I just want to congratulate you on your new album I think we all expected with great gusto and also make a small but special gift which I feel, well we all hope Coruña and Galicia all very proud to be named our city like the sound of the sea has the most beautiful in the world I hope you enjoy it all, good luck. http://tv.laopinioncoruna.es/?VideoId=29305
Denisa, yes France was hit by a storm on Sunday, the worst since 1999. Several other countries were hit too. I hope there hasn't been serious damage where you live. Grosse bise.
Hi Tim, you really are a different person. I love his work as a musician and I admire as a person. Despite the fame and notoriety you can keep the balance and seems to constantly seek growth as a human being. You are great. Thank you for the affection and respect that the band has always shown by the fans of Brazil. Kisses!
OK Miha, I believe you are now doing excellent stuff, wherever you are ! It´s rainning cats and dogs here- very beastly weather, not only here as I heard on news. In spite of that be in good moon, kisses- many and sweet !!!
Hi Tim, a book that changed my life and made it easier was the Bible. I began to see life differently, optimistic and looking similar to my other eye. I'm learning every day and it brings me closer to God and make me strong to face any storm. Experience is very cool and has nothing to grimace as people think. We all feel the same, we are thirsty for change and an inner restlessness but never know where to start. You can find inspiration to many areas of your life. If you read the Bible open your heart, lower your weapons, do so without fear. It is a unique and very personal. Kisses
You expressed my thoughts Duda. I'm with you,bjs Rach - Rio de Janeiro
Yes Denisa. Fortunately I agree with you about Paulo Coelho, so we can leave the conversation there, ha, ha. Unconditional love my dear.
I am always happy to read your words Tim, makes me think that my admiration for you is not only by the imagination of a fan. It makes me really believe that you are a great man. bjs Duda - Rio de Janeiro
Miha, this topic can be dicussed at great length.... But my definitive opinion on P.Coelho is: He Didn´t and He Doesn´t Write For Mercenary Reasons.!! Mankind is making head against not only natural worldwide catastrophe but mainly against the destructive power of human behaviour - very agressive and attacking ideas and acts ...... " I stood in the midst of the world, and I appeared to them in flesh. I found them all Drunk, I found none among them thirsting, and my soul was afflicted for the sons of men, for they are Blind in their heart- and they so not see. For Empty came they into world, seeking also to depart empty from the world. But now they are drunk. When they thrown off their wine, then will they repent." / g. of Thomas.- secret words of J./ Love and blessings
You're welcome Denisa! About mercenary, what I've found in the Longman dictionary is this:" only interested in the money you may be able to get from a person, job etc: She ( 'she' again!) did it for purely mercenary reasons./ a mercenary attitude". I agree that we have to make a living but the adverb 'only' is significant, isn't it ? Wouldn't you rather that someone be interested in you for what you are not what you have ?
It is great honour , dear Mihajasoa, thanks!!!!!! I foundt the word " mercenary" in Oxford Dictionary . It was explained in this way : She´s interested in him for purely MERCENARY reasons. Anyway evreyone must make his living. Someone works at factory/ btw. many priests had to work as workers in factories or mines in 50s , 60s, 70s last century in these corners of the World/, other one write poems or novels and other make music. All our society/ in all over the world/ is mercenary i. e. we all must make our living- making or getting money. with love
have a recommendation, here> bio. about Oasis. Dare I mention it? title is- getting high: the adventures of oasis. author is- paolo hewitt check it out, anyone.....
I'm Glad this isn't like the Oprah 'thang!' neat choices, TRO!
It's really interesting to see how players from other countries are impressed with the books of Paulo Coelho, I personally (I'm Brazilian) and never had the curiosity to read any of his many published books. But as always to read what arouses interest and is well indicated by others, I read this book too. Thanks Tim and Jesse tbm. Kisses
Hi there, I hope all is good with you? This weekend make time to curl up with a good book and escape into your imagination for a while! Love & Blessings Rachel xxoo
Took a long nap now sipping on some tea wishing for passion *** Rocking Kisses to you ***
Golf Course, what I meant was that Paulo Coehlo may not be driven by money when writing but have some other purposes that could be aesthetic or didactic, etc. I haven't read his books so I can't tell. He may have expressed himself on the subject but I have no knowledge of that ( maybe it's somewhere in his website). As regards Denislavia, I never thought I was patient. Thanks for the compliment, you're very kind. In fact I regard her as my friend.
Denisa, I wish I could answer your question but I can't. I think it depends on the musicians. Some want to express themselves through music for instance. I don't think there's one single answer for that. It's a long story! (mankind, civilisation...). Love to you too.
DAND 57 - as a religious leader / you wrote it/ you must know this": J. said" " Love your brother like your soul, keep him as the apple of your eye." " You see the Mote in your brother´s eye, but you do not see the beam in your own eye. When you cast the beam out of your own eye, then you will see clarly to cast the mote from your brother´s eye." Simply " Judge not, that you be not judged ". I don´t want to say you , of course that you have a beam in your eye, dand! :)
Hey Tim!! I loved this book when I read it long time ago in Spanish (my language). BUT, If you accept a suggestion, I STRONGLY recommend you THE PHYSICIAN (by Noah Gordon). This book is a jewel of the universal literature. Although you'll need so much time to read it (it has aprox. 600 pages), it's worth your time. Seriously. HUGE HUGS FROM CHILE :)
I totaly agree with CarolineDornelles! P. Coelho's books aren't even analized as literature in Brazil! So, how can his work be well-known in England? I think you guys should read some REAL brazilian literature! Like the ones mentioned by CarolineDornelles. Hey DENISLAVIA, I dislike him just because for me he is not a religious leader, he is not a writer, he is just nothing! No offense man! It's just my opnion! Love You Keane!
hello all - stumbled on this beautiful time lapse : http://vimeo.com/9679622# reminded me of the ones richard took during the tour - have fun
How Brazilian and admirer of this wonderful writer, I fully agree with what you say about his book, it makes you want to stop reading, each page is an adventure and each page turn is a sad Why the book will eventually. "Brida is one of the best I have ever read, if I were you would not fail to read. kisses
Really GREAT!!!
Hi, Paulo Coelho has many wonderful books. It's amazing that Tom has read one those.
Tom!! the most perfect artist . You’re such a pleasure in my life; Much Love & Respect ~ Rachel ~
I LOVE YOU TIM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Paulo Coelho is from Brazil, my country!..his books are inspired on spiritual journeys with another vision of the life and death...on past he was a composer partner of Raul Seixas that was one composer songs (ideologic songs)..here in Brazil his literature is considered poor and commercial...experiment read Machado de Assis, Manuel Bandera, Clarice Lispector, Carlos Drummond de Andrade, etc...just some suggestions!...but on my oppinion it`s one sensitive literature....that invite some reflections about the way that we conduct our life, it`s like one mix of our dreams and fears...and at the same time talk about process of humans metamorphosis... hugs Carol from Brazil
Dear Tim, when I saw the author's name, I was a bit sneery due to the reviews I've read about his novels. On the other hand, I've already knew him as a partner of Raul Seixas, a famous rock singer in Brazil. Thanks for the hint, I liked the book but I think that Paulo Coelho's life made him the best character he could never ever ever dream of. He's an amazing person. With love, da brasileira Regina.
Mihajaosa - Could you explain what you mean by " Paulo Coelho may have other motives than mercenary ones for writing?" As for trying to understand what Denislavia is talking about, you have more patience than most people.
Just droppin' by to say HI! .. such wonderful words of wisdom as always.. Sending lots of love over to you and wishing you a gorgeous evening xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Thinking of you always -- Take care!!
@Mihajaosa- What what does it mean? This Norwwegian "Hei, ha det Bra? That´s means utterly trivial Hallo, have a good time! - my old good Friend! Author himself suffered from a torture. Couldn´t lead it him to a rediscovery of religion and to a need of writing about this experience? Btw. Miha What motives have musicians for make a music? with unconditional love
Actually , Frankie you are a good model for others to copy!
About the prologue, Tim, there's a funny gap between the blasé Master who is preoccupied with his bodily comfort and who's performing a routine procedure and the pathetic disciple who's coping with physical pain and tragic failure.
Constantine, Paulo Coelho may have other motives than mercenary ones for writing. It would certainly be better to read his novels, which I haven't done so far.
Thanks Denisa, but what does it mean ?
Good Heavens, that ś not possible ! Frankie , you are so funny, you crack me up , :)
Oh, dearie, yes, please! But I´d also go for nutter butters...!!!
Frankie, your outstanding spirituality renders me speechless. Haver you ever considered writing a book? And may I suggest a title? Saint Francis, the rainbowminded warrior, perhaps...
Frankie, maybe a bit of cynicism? Anyway I am so happy, in April we will travel to Salisbury ,/ for ten days/" to solve the riddle" of Stonehenge, to go sightseeing, maybe seek out the Salisbury Giant and his mischievous companion Hob Nob, and to take several lessons of English, with an accommodation in families. I´am really enjoying it so much!!! Finally I don´t feel down .... And maybe one day I ĺl make a pilgrimage to the Spain with you, and it will be my Zenith! Love
thank you tim for the recomendation .. You are always so nice :). Now I am reading an Agatha Christie book, i love them. I read a lot in holidays, because next week i'll be starting school... that's not good haha. i love you guys... i wish someday i'll be playing my piano in a keane show with you guys. .... ami_keaner =D (from argentina)
I've read it and I think it's very good, I really like it. Coelho's books are pretty cool (they were the ones with wich I started to read seriously, they're easy to read and have good flowing), they make you internalize and wonder about who you are and what you've done of your life, your love, your soul. Yet after I read few more books of him and I realized that he uses always the same scheme, I feel like it's always the same base but with different stories and characters... I think it gets to the point when it lacks of elements to make it trascendental literature (you gotta read Borges, Kundera, García Márquez...). Anyways I believe it's a great book, it made me think and reflect, to have a good time and if you take the most of it, even change your life a little bit. :)
Paulo Coelho is an amazing writer, but is best book is probably "Brida"! But this book its good too and in Portugal everyone likes Paulo Coelho because he is very spiritual
Good night from Spain, I have not read the book appointments, but if I read enough by Paulo Coelho and personally my favorite is 11 minutes, in this case a girl who lives the adventure of a lifetime no doubt, but if you like are the books that one can enrich, there is a book I read years ago that I really liked the easy and hard while reading it. Dawn in the desert (sorry if translation is not correct) by Waris Dirie, who tells the story in first person about overcoming, human rights and the hard life of families in Somalia, if you get to read it I hope you enjoy and make you rich, kisses
@ Miha, Frankie - Hei, Ha det BRA! / Norwegian , but I am not from Norway/
@Frankie, if Richard's middle name starts with a D, I actually understood everything you've said!
Roger!
btw, that journey in Spain - Caminho de Santiago - does exist.
got and read the book... all of his books leads us to another dimension besides the ordinary view we have of life. I have no doubts that a better reflexion of ourselves and what we really are makes us a better person and this book (and the others of Coelho) changes that in each of us, depending how serious we take the book into our lifes. Since him I always think a sentence when I need to deal with any problem: "whats the worst that can hapen" and we learn to cool down and avoid to overreact to anything that hapens during our life. Those exercises he teaches in some books freaks me a litle but the rest... awesome! Nice pick. If I'm allowed, look for José Rodrigues dos Santos. Maybe starting with Codex 632 which exists in english. He's compared to Dan Brown but I think he's better. kiss*
Hi guys ! Why don't you come in Belgium ?? I wanna see you!! Guys I miss you! all these comments and divided opinions give me more desire for reading this book and this author that I know but that I never read. After having discovered Paul Auster (I already read Brooklyn follies, Leviathan, oracle night - great -) here, I ready want to read this book. After, I will read "Veronika decides to die" witch arouses the interest of many people. Enormes bisous à tous
:D
Sorry for my typing errors, - lack of time, no , unfortunately, awkwardness..
Dand57 - you write P. Coelho is religious leader just you, so can I ask you why do you dislike him? I think P. Coelho is a prominent writer and notable person. He re- found the faith aafter even a torture , mainly after a mental experience in concent. camp in Dachau/ Germany/ when he saw a man - vision,.Lately he met this man in Amsterdam who initiated him into the order RAM : Rigor- Rogorous Amor - love Misericordia- Meercy. Then hwe made a pigrimage from the South of France to Spanish holy place - well known- Santiago de Compostella./ 700 km or 800 / And then , in 1987 he wrote his first bestseller The Pilgrimage. The story shows that love can make us stronger and it is this strength that allows us to make the right decisions. During his journey he discovers the things that we need in life such as truth, agape, enthusiasm , and spirituality. " It appears that a newlywed do really love each other. And they believe that their love will grow. But shortly, they will be alone with each other struggling to earn a living, build a house, and share their misadventure. For he will begin to feel that he´s not free enough to express all of the eros/ the feeling of love for another/, all of the love that he has for other women. Shi will begin to feel that she had gave up brilliant career in order to be her husband. So, instead of creating something together, each would begin to feel robbed of the means to express eros and the spirit that unites them would begin to reveal only its negative side. And What God had provided to humans as their noblest sentiment would become a source of hatred and destructiveness. EROS therefore makes us feel apart from the world, TRAPPED in our solitude.!" PHILOS is love in the form of friendship. It is what we feel towards others. When the flame of eros stops burning, it is philos that keeps a couple together." AGAPE is both eros and philos. Agape is total love that consumes... Agape is much more than liking. It is a feeling that suffuses, that fills every spaces in us, and turns our aggresion to dust. Whoever knows and experience agape learns that nothing else in the world is important just love. This is the kind of love that can shook the stars and change the course of history and enable us to accomplish things that kings, armies, and empires could not." @ Agnes, yes, it is very sad, but there are many mental pain too which maybe can´t be healed.... Once more P. Coelho - The Pilgrimage - " Fans who lack faith can make a winning team lose a game." I believe Tim and Jesse will be successful in their new project, I pray for you,
Though I've read one of his books and I don't agree with these "intellectuals", I have to say that if I were supposed to give you a recommendation of a brazilian autor he wouldn't be my first option. (I'm brazilian, and since I love reading, I can say with sure that there are some greater authors). Just for the record, I've commented here already, but I forgot to say this.
I LOVE MAFALDA , SHE IS ALWAYS UPDATED EVEN THOUGH SHE WAS CREATED IN THE 60'S. AND SHE IS SAT DOWN IN SAN TELMO XD! ( HER SCULPTURE,OBVIOUS)
*******DEAR TIM : IT IS GOOD THAT YOU KNOW PAULO COELHO´S WORKS , AS LIKE IS TEXTS A LOT. I´D LIKE TO READ SOME OF HIS BOOK AS "VERONIKA DECIDE MORIR" (I KNOW IT´S VERY VERY GOOD) "A ORILLAS DEL RIO PIEDRA ME SENTE Y LLORE", AND OTHERS. SOON I´LL HAVE OPORTUNITY FOR READING THEM. ALTHOUGH, OBVIOUSLY THERE CAN BE SOME THOUGHTS THAT DON´T SHARE ( IN SOME OF HIS TEXTS HE MENTION MANY STORIES ABOUT MONKS AND OTHER SIMILAR THINGS) BUT ANYWAY, HIS BOOKS AND TEXTS ARE GOOD. HERE, THERE´S A RECOMMENDATION FOR YOU: I THINK YOU SHOULD READ AN ARGENTINA SHORT STORY CALLED "MAFALDA", YOU CAN GET IT IN ENGLISH IF YOU WISH, BUT IF YOU WANT READ IT IN ITS VERSION IN SPANISH, THERE´S NO TROUBLE =) THIS SHORT STORY IS ABOUT A LITTLE GIRL. SHE WONDERED ABOUT WHAT WAS HAPPENING IN THE WORLD , AS FOR POLITICAL (WARS, AGREMENTS) AND DAILY THINGS , WITH HER SPEECHS , IRONIES, HER FUNNY WAY TO SPEAK OVER THESE MATTERS AND HER FACILITY TO PHILOSOPHIZE. SHE LOVES BEATLE´S MUSIC AND SHE HATES SOUP. INDEED "MAFALDA" IS A GEM. IT WOULD BE GREAT THAT PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD KNOW THEIR STORIES, OBVIOUSLY YOU TOO! FROM ARGENTINA
I'm not quite sure that all proverbs or quotes are accurate and, i.e. don't tell her that "every cloud has a silver lining"... I'd just like to recall the horrific tragedy because I cried a river when I saw this unbearable pic... I feel awful, almost guilty for being spared of a such misfortune when I look at her beautiful face and this body cruelly bruised in the flesh... The way she is staring into space is terribly heart-rending... What a mess but what an unbelievable lesson in courage !... We must keep on sending money but the congratulations go to all rescuers and helpers who are on fieldwork... Doctor KEANE, could you tell if time will be actually the best healer ?!... http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/23/world/americas/23amputee.html
The only Coelho book I've read is "Veronika decides to die" and I really enjoyed it. It is, of course, a story that goes through the pain and desolation of a very deep and well-described character but there is also so much simplicity and reality in that story that you kind of feel you are being part of someone's life instead of just reading random words in a book's page. I strongly recommend it, Tim, if you liked Coelho's writing, you should definetely go for that one.
Hey guys you're so fantastic! But Paulo Coelho?!?! Oh no. I totaly dislike him. He is also brazilian like me, he is just a religious leader, so for those who disagree with his religion, his books aren't the best ones! Danilo Brasília- Brazil
I would like to know who is the producer of the Keane's EP. Bye! valentina from Mendoza, Argentina.

It got light at about 6,15 o´clock this morning. I opened my window and I spotted that the rime was on the grass and on the branches of trees... My feelings stood out in sharp relief against todays´s frost morning. Actually these twoo things harmonized each other, - "The essence itself is ever at ease." I pondered over this " fight the good fight" what does it mean? in any case , " take rest, a field that has rested gives a bountiful crop".
“A beginning is only the start of a journey to another beginning.” ~ Have a great new week dearest Tom! Love always, Rachel ღ

Yes, Tim, you should read all of Paolo Coelho´s books, then you will see how clever this guy is selling his spirituality over and over again...
Hi .. Paolo Coehlo is a great writer, but my what I call the attention of the manual was `` The Warrior of Light `` wow surprised me the 1st time I saw him was amazing because it made me think, I did think about many things, and I thought to myself wow it even seems that `` The manual of the Warrior of Light `` is made for me ... I will tell you that the 1st time I showed what I was told my cousins look choose without seeing a paragraph and then read it and then I chose one and I play one .. until I got enrolled into a book, and says: The warrior of light always manages to balance Rigor and Mercy. To achieve his dream, you need a strong will and an immense capacity for delivery: even if you have a goal, not always the way to achieve this is that you can imagine. So the warrior uses the discipline and compassion. God never abandons his children - but their designs are unfathomable, and he builds the road with our own steps. Using discipline and delivery, the warrior he enthuses. The routine can never lead major movements. That thought I Fasina, that's something I'll never forget. Also, I read the book,''`` The fifth mountain have told me that is very good and they're going to pay me. Well get up here because I do my homework. Please pass on my page: I love you http://www.fotolog.com/i_ddrreeaamm .....................

I've read others like "The alchemist", "The manual of the warrior of light" and "The fifth mountain". The alquemist is great too.
how could Tim still be able to have some time off to read a book? How does he do that? lol impressive! but, I've reached the point in which i'm not suprised with almost anything that he does, I kind of think he's able to do whatever he wants, which is great! ISA, from Brasil --- I am back here just to say I was watching a movie trailer on dvd and I listened to Keane playing SOWK in that trailer of a movie called (some like that) Purple Violet. Wow... amazing! It was not a cover, but Keane playing, I mean, on the track... Amazing... :.) LOTS OF LOVE, MY FAVOURITE BAND! XXXXXXXXX
By the way Tim and Jesse, thank you. Because i discovered an other good band thanks to your project MT desolation : Noah and the Whale. I like very much "Our window", among others. I also discovered a great band yesterday : Midlake. Listen "Acts of Man". Very very beautiful. Good sunday to all of you 4, Keane.
I carry your heart with me (I carry it in my heart) I am never without it (anywhere I go you go, my dear; Sleep tight!!! Kisses2Thomas...♥
Paulo Coelho...He is an important writer for me. A remarkable person. I read his books since i am young (though i have not read this one). "Like the flowing river" is the best according to me. Fragments of philosophy, fragments of Paulo's thoughts. Probably the book i offered the most. In addition, a day i was down in the dumps, i wrote him a mail and he answered me a very strong message of hope. That's why he is and will stay a very great person for me.
On the other hand these are some relaxing Zen quotes /J. Kerouac/ to soothe our being " Don´t seek, don´t search, don´t ask, don´t knock, don´t demand - relax. If you relax, it comes. If you relax, it is there. If you relax, you start vibrating with it." Osho " This art of resting the mind and the power of dismissing from it all care and worry is probably one of the secrets of energy in our great men." Captain J.A. Haddfield " Tension is who you think you should be. Relaxation is who you are ." Chinese proverb
....." With great effort, we learn how to fight, but by then we no longer have the courage to go into combat. So we turn against ourselves and do battle within. We become our own worst enemy. We say that our dreams were childish or too difficult to realize, or the result or our not having known enough about life. We kill our dreams because we are afraid to fight the good fight!!! " -- Paolo Coelho The Pilgrimage / It is too familiar to me, too/
Thanks for the link Tim. It's a whole new world there. I spent one hour!
me to me to!! i read a book of paulo!! es great!!
Well, I'm brazilian and a person that belongs to sciences....but after a long day working and after all the math and chemistry is good to me to just seat and read some art book or paulo coelho, I think it's a very relaxing reading, and I really enjoy his writing since I was a teenager so, I'm happy that one of his books it's in Tim's list... But I respect every single opinion I've read here, especially from brazilian fans, we have to support each other in our love to this wonderful band! Thanks Tim for another sugestion and kisses to every one
Haaaaaay que coincidencia yo habia leido ese libro hace unos mesess!!! jajaj TE AMO CON TODO MI CORAZÓN TIM!!!!!!!!! Agostina de Arg :D
Peter Gabriel? Excellent spiritual guide to catharsis, LOL. But not Paolo´s platitudes on spirituality, please no...
@ TIM – So you’re finally on your way to CATHARSIS! I’m truly happy for you. Please listen to Peter Gabriel’s SOLSBURY HILL at least 5x on repeat..”When illusion spin her net I’m never where I want to be/And liberty she pirouette when I think that I am free/ Watched by empty silhouettes who close their eyes but still can see/No one taught them etiquette/I will show another me”. Show another you, Tim! ~ love, zara
i'm from chile and, of course i do know paulo coelho, not sure, but are you recommending to read the alchemist, very good reading, i did it i really love it regards to everyone
I'M BRAZILLIAN TOO! I NEVER GOT TO READ A PAULO COELHO'S BOOK, BUT IF I GET TO READ SOME WILL SURELY BE THAT ONE! I LOVED YOUR WORDS, THE BOOK SEEMS TO BE REALLY INTERESTING, AND IF YOU CAN CATCH SOMETHING GOOD OUT OF IT, IT'S EVEN BETTER! LOVE YOU TIM, YOU ARE MY FAVORITE KEYBOARDER AND PIANIST AND YOUR SONGS ARE WONDERFULL! I LOVE KEANE FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART AND HAVE A DREAM TO MEET THE BAND WHEN YOU COME TO BRAZIL AGAIN! LOTS OF HUGS AND KISSES! PAULA WILLIAMS
¨ ♡. Hi TIM, give very proud to know that you liked the book by a Brazilian writer. ♡ I read Paulo Coelho's "Brida"! Now I want to read "Verônica decides to die," all me recommend, Everyone who has read much liked! ♡ The Brasil ♡ you boys and I too. ♡ ¨
Thanks for the laugh, Tim. Jesse will never be my literature guru. Reading Coelho after really serious literature is like jumping on a donkey's back after riding horses for years. Thank you very much, anyway.
Hello there!! Keep smiling. You´re the One xoxo
Thanks Tim! I was riveted by your review. Looks like The Pigrimage is an interesting book dealing with internal and external events. Just great! - Thank you to Jesse - Hope you've all recovered from the Brit Award disappointment. Thank goodness you're still an interesting band with or without the award.
well Paulo is very popular in Argentina too, currently he's working in a local magazine ( Viva) writing his stories...
Good to know you read a Brazilian author! I agree with the "wide-eyed books about spiritual adventures", but it´s cool to read that kind of thing once in a while :-) A big kiss from Brazil, Tim! []
Thanks Tim! :) I really wish I had time to read now, but I'll definitely add this to my list! '
Coelho is a writer who invite you to a journey beyond your spirituality. The same book can be read it in differents moments of life and you will find it differents meaning according to your mood. "By the river Piedras I sat down and wept", is another good book.
two or three months ago I send you a lot (real big lot) of mails , asking for your favorites books, and, as always, you boys are soooooooooo kind and nice to make my dreams come true, I really like Coehlo, especially BRIDA (recomend it) , you could try Carlos Castaneda books too ;) a big kiss, Pili.
I've read this book, and it's one of my favourites. I also tried to do one of the lessons he did, where you just try to hear every sound, pay attention to everything. Many people don't like Paulo Coelho here in Brazil, but I don't really care, I've read the book, I loved it, it made me feel better and made me think about how I live and things I could do to live better, if that isn't a good reading, I don't know what a good reading is.
ooh Jess you're right, The Alchemist is great, TIM YOU SHOULD READ THIS ONE TOO!!!! Lots of love from Mexico!!!!
"The Pilgrimage" is one of my favorite books. Thanks for share your opinion about this beautiful journey into the philosophy. Paulo Coelho is a genious.
Hello Tim! Thats great that you read something from Coelho cos he is a wonderful writer. I havent read The Pilgrimage but I have read The Alchemist, Eleven Minutes, and By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept by him, which I totally recommend! Have a good one! Lots of
HELOISA, ISA FROM BRASIL, SAO PAULO ******** I do hope I was not rude with Tim, since he was very perceptive and reached well what PC wanted to say as a "message" in his book. Just to say probably in English his poor writing (PC writing) does not appear so poor as we know and see clearly it is when we read it in Portuguese. Normally people who do not have a College degree here in Brasil or are not used to reading our best authors love his literature, who is easy to be understood. I mean, in his novels he does not build sophisticated metaphores or some like that and he goes straight to the point of "a story", with the facts and describe them in a poor way. So, people who deal with critical review or usually read good authors, in general, do not consider he writes well, what does not make him a not popular writer, on the contrary. Probably the book Tim read is the best of his; many novels are really terribly poor, sorry to say that. Well, just to say that I did not mean to be rude with Tim, our intelligent and sensitive song writer... :.) Lots of love, Tim! XXXXX
Cris, this The Devil and Miss Prym seems to be very stunning story charged with emotion. A man comes searching for the answer to a question " Are human beings , in essence good or evil?" I think they are much more inclined to be evil than good. And I ask myself how can I win against evil? my evil and evil of other ones / I confess I give up hope! / Bible advices lent and prayers , maybe it is right, but I don´t know ....
Thanks Tim !...You always take a little time for us (even when you are very very busy !)... That's still much appreciated !... I've heard about this book and this author but I don't know about the real value of his writing... Sorry ! However, I'm too thinking of making a pilgrimage to Lourdes (city of miracles) mainly in order to pray for the comeback of KEANE in France, as soon as possible... And I'm very sceptical because seems like it's not at all to the order of business... Sorry, but today this book is the least of my worries ! I received my car insurance dues (true) and I'm in a bad mood because in spite of being a good driver (50% de Bonus, the max that you can get), it's still increasing... Actually, cars cost an arm and a leg and I'm disgusted... By the way, I hope you're also doing some sport, Tim !!!
This really valuable book and a spiritually uplifting piece of music in Studio 5/ Tim, Mt. Desolat./ - very meditave and sedative sound´s effects-. are a good match. I can see everywhere a lack of spiritual values, so Tim, you are a sweet balm for me! wishing all the best , good night
Ohh this is so fantastic Tim!! Paulo Coelho is a genius, truly a fabulous brazilian writer and it makes me feel so proud and thrilled to know that you read one of his books and enjoyed that much. You should really read more stories written by him, there are other ones that are really great, I think you would love "The Devil and Miss Prym", it's a fabulous book too, it was such an important book to me. The thing that I love the most about him and his stories is that he's so spiritual but not religious, and I think that that's what makes his words so truly related to our lives, without any kind of hypocrisy (what usually may come with religion, with all due respect to all religions). Well anyway, that was a great tip Tim, thank you so much. I read some Paulo Coelho books, but not this one (which just for curiosity it's called here in Brazil "O Diário De Um Mago"). Always great getting some news from you Timmy. Supersize love. Cris xxx.
If, Paulo Coelho! Is a genius! ♥
OOOOOO and as they say should try reading " ensayo sobre la ceguera"by José Saramago is also very good and you have ribbed jajajaja muy bueno ;) saludes!!!!
I have not really read that book, I've always been curious that we have a library and is one of the best-selling books. I read Paulo Coelho's "Brida" and "By the River Stone ..." enter my top books and recommend them. so now I work on the pilgrimage so try to read it. ciao
I read it below and I think the same: You should read something about Garcia Marquez, he is great
I didn't know Paulo Coelho had his books translated...amazing how even books cross borders :D ***
Tim, I just want to know, when do you have time to read all of these books? They seem interesting and I'd like to Thank You for sharing! LOVE YOU KEANE!!!!!!
Tim you're something special!!! LOVE U KEANE !!!!
THANK TIM IS REALLY SOMETHING THAT I REALLY LIKE TO READ I HOPE FOUND A TRANSLATE IN MEXICO I LOVED , JESSE THANKS TOO !!! XOXOXOXOXO ROSE XOXOXOXO
"Paulo Coelho is one of those writers that intellectuals can be a bit sneery about, because he writes these very wide-eyed books about spiritual adventures and everything is always a metaphor for some kind of spiritual discovery or philosophy." It happens a lot, I can say. I've read some books of his own, but not this one. Looks great, though... And well, I actually got really happy because he's an brazilian author, and you've read it and all. (LOL) To be honest, I prefer the others authors but he's great too.
sounds like the sort of book i should get round to reading :)
Hi Tim, Thank you for the review. I will definitely be reading this book. Annette x
Arthur C. Clarke is genious *_*
I LOOK FORWARD TO READING THIS BOOK TIM, LOOKS GOOD. XXXXXXXXXXXXX
@Jazy: Love those books. Arthur C. Clarke - Childhood´s End made me an SF afficionado. Karellen - what a character!
well I haven't ever read a single thing by him, but now you made me want to try that one... I've read 2 books like that -that makes you think about your own life and things you could change- one that I'm about to end: The End Of The Childhood and another one that I read about one year ago: The City And The Stars, both by Arthur Clarke... both are great books...
Wow!! Paulo Coelho, brazilian writer. I have read a few of Paulo Coelho books but none have touched me in the way that The Pilgrimage has. It's my fave book by Paulo Coelho. I learnt a lot from this book.Thank you very much Tim!! I Wish you a lovely weekend.
Yes, sorry, but I´m one of these sneering intellectuals. Heloisa, you are not alone in this. - Johanna, Michael Ende is one of my favorite writers too, and I still think they butchered The Neverending Story by turning it into a movie.
@anayahaira, he is one of the most importat nowadays Latin writers. He also has worked in theatre, as a journalist and music composer. Garcia Marquez or Saramago have a total different style from Cohelo. They are all writers, even you don´t like his writing, they still are.
@STELLITA. Tienes razon, este libro trata de la peregrinacion del autor , a Santiago de Compostela , en Galicia, España, y el viaje espiritual que supone. Algun dia nos veremos alli !!! Those of you who had read this book, will notice that, it reflects the evidence, the deep meditation one person gets into, while walking through this historical, cultural, religious road. I recommend this book as well as making and enjoying (but also suffering) EL CAMINO DE SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA , that means field of stars. It´s a spriritual jouney. Santiago is one of the most beautiful cities one can ever see. At least for me. It´s a real wonder.
Hi Tim, I respect to Paulo Coelho but, I don´t think is a great writter. I can to recommend you García Marquéz, Carlos Fuentes and José Saramago he have a amazing book called Ensayo sobre la Ceguera (Blindness) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blindness_%28novel%29. I hope this information help you. Best wishes from Mexico!!!
@isa and @Amandaaa I agee with both.
I must admit I've never read a book from P. Coelho, but sometimes I think in reading this book and the main reason is that he has doing this pilgrimage through Spain. As an history teacher I am very interested in what foreigh people think about this subject, and now I have not excuse for reading this book. By the way, you have had the opportunity of visiting Santiago de Compostela last summer *wink*. Love Carmen x.
Thanks Tim for your review.. A book by Coelho is easy to find here in the bookshops, I couldn`t get The Dharma Bums... I`m definitely gonna read this one. It seems really interesting and I`ve never read anything by Coelho and everybody always talked about him..At the moment I`m reading 1984 by Orwell, when I finish it (and whem my exams at College end), I`m gonna buy The pilgrimage..." We're all slaves to the same obsessions and limitations and fears and dreams and so on", you could put that on a song, you know ;) haha Love from Argentina
Hi Tim!!! I've read Broklyn Follies and i'll buy this book, Kisses from Spain!!!
tim really are a genius, and would be a great book if you write one. I admire you tim! Argentina Mendoza Jime kisses * :)
Coehlo is the best writer I have readen. I'm surprised you have recomended this book, no matter what people say, I have heard all of that comments on my life, the important thing is how interesting is to read, and how it changes and give hope to my life.
EL CAMINO DE SANTIAGO IS THE BEST WAY TO KNOW YOURSELF, TO FIND SPECIAL PEOPLE AND INCREDIBLE PLACES. AND WHY NOT TO KNOW A DIFFERENT SPAIN. KISSES FROM THE MIDDLE OF THE WAY
My favourite Coelho's book - The Manual of the Warrior of Light It is the book thanks to which I accept the life such what it is )) I didn't read The Pilgrimage, but already want to do it) Thanks for the review)
I do not like Coelho at all. I AGREE WITH ISA and AMANDAAA! I prefer Horacio Quiroga 'the slaughtered fowl' hehe or Edgar Allan Poe ♥ or Lewis Carrol or Borges or Jorge Amado ^_^ and many others! But thanks anyway Tim !
My favourite Coelho's book - The Manual of the Warrior of Light ) It is the book thanks to which I accept the life such what it is=) I didn't read The Pilgrimage but I already want to read it) Thanks for the review! sorry for bad English
LOTS OF HUGS AND KISSES! PAULA WILLIAMS
Amanda from Paraná, Brasil *** Well, he's really polemic, i mean, a lot of people think that what he writes is really bad, a lot of people adore him. I belong to the group that doesn't like his books, i think it's 'just commercial' literature. As a brazilian and book's lover, Tim, I can assure you that there're much better brazilian authors, like Clarice Lispector. I think you might like her, you seem to be (well, for what I can realize in your lyrics) a really 'deep' and 'existencialist' person, and she's just like that (:
Thank you very much , Tim for your amazing, incredible words. You remind not only me the demand for being better persons- this is very important now, in this world. And I promise I´ll read this book as soon as possible !!!! with gratitude and love
Well I've never read any of Paulo Coelho books. That's weird because I'm brazilian and ALL of my portuguese language/literature teachers don't say good things about his work. So i've never had the interest of reading his books. BUT now that Tim said that The Pilgrimage is good ... I think I'll try reading Paulo Coelho next time. lol. LOVE KEANE. :)
I read this book many years ago, along with several other Paulo Coelho books, and just loved it. It inspired me in so many ways and is my favorite of his works along with The Valkyries. He makes you look at the world through different eyes and, I feel, shows that the spiritual world is all around us and within us and not in buildings of worship or religious leaders. I read quite a lot; however, the message of this one has stayed with me over many, many years.
I love Paulo Coelho...in Buenos Aires is very popular! I recommed, "A orillas del Río Piedra me senté y lloré". This novel remembers to your phrase "Sat by the river and it made me complete". The story is beautiful, beautiful, beautiful! Every book has a special message..! :) I love you, Tim! PD: eNGLISH version is "By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept" . (Year 1994)
Well, I´ve read from him long ago the Alchimist. And I forgot now, if some more from him, but at the moment I´m not so much in reading-mood. How about a german kids/teenager/adult book? Michael Ende " Momo"? I think it´s quite good & fits so well in this human time. The grey men are stealing people´s time & people forget how to appreciate the small things of life, because they are always worrying about the future. It´s a really great book, I´ve read in school long time ago.
HELOISA, ISA FROM BRASIL, SAO PAULO ******** Well, well, well, here we go... sorry to say, taking the risk to be seen as a complicated/"persona no grata" person... but, as a writer and a journalist who works with literature review, I have to say that people here in Brasil who love arts, who know what Art and specially literature is, do not like this author. He was supported for a huge marketing at the time of his book being lauched/published and he had a famous agent who put his books in Europe... His writing is mediocre and popular in a bad sense of the word. Anyway, I repete, people here who love arts do not like his "literature". Sorry. But I know he is popular now in most of the countries and he is very very rich now and he is, also, a very good person, I mean, as a person, but his !"literature" is POOR and what he made was to gather many Western sayings and put them together in a kind of novels very POORLY written. Sorry and sorry my poor English as well. LOTS OF LOVE TO MY FAVOURITE BAND! XXXXXXXXX
Paulo Coelho is a very famous brazilian writer and his books are a really spiritual journey. Tim, you got the message!!!
He's absolutley AMAZING. One of my favs as well...
I also read a coelho book a while ago and it was quite interesting. The book was: "veronika decides to die" beautiful!
I'm suspect to say a thing about Paulo Coelho, he is for sure one of my favourite writer ever... well, im brazilian so i dont know if that counts haha
