When I think of a record shop I think of rummaging through bins of second-hand vinyl, ending up with an arm-load of stuff I'd always meant to get round to listening to but always forgot to buy. Then I realise that I'm loving the CD that's playing on the shop's hi-fi and I can go and ask the guys behind the desk what it is, learn about a new band perhaps, maybe even make a friend! For me David's Music in Letchworth is the indie shop I've spent the most time in, and I've been massively inspired by music I've heard and bought in there; before that it was Mrs Yarrington's in Battle, and more recently the tiny but excellent Union Music in Lewes.
But I've also loved places that are now gone, driven out of business by huge chain stores, supermarkets and of course the internet. If we value real record shops then we need to support them and cherish the things that make them great. In support of Record Store Day 2012 (Sat, April 21st), Tom and I are going to drop in to Rough Trade East in London that evening to play a few stripped-back songs. There are other great bands playing that day, including the wonderful Johnny Flynn, and the same sort of thing will be happening in record shops up and down the country. So please come and join us to celebrate and support independent music shops - it's going to be fun!

That's where it all started for me....and I still like something tangible in my hands to listen to...not such a fan of downloads....I, of course, will take YOUR music any way I can get it!!!! Any chance you let us have a list of the independent record shops taking part? I can't get to London but would like to support anything else that might be local to me.
We used to call in 'Cavern Records' in LLandudno every time we went there in the summer, but then suddenly it wasn't there any more. Great record shop probably forced out by the big shops, used to spend hours in there.
I love going to record stores too :) If you all come back to Chicago on a US tour this summer (PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE), there are a bunch in the city to check out! My recommendation: Reckless Records

SALUT TIM°°°°je suis d'accord avec toi le progrès c'est genial!!mais tous ses grands megastore sont tellement impersonnel ils sont juste la pour faire du chiffre (rentabilite) quoi de plus sympa qu'une de ces petite boutique ou tu trouves tout et nimporte°° quoi du tube de l'année°° au succès du passé !! lorsque tu rentre dans un de ces lieu tu te laisses envahir par l'emotion de la musique quelques notes et aussitot tu te sens transporter °°°°un peu de chaleur humaine et pouvoir partager sa passion de la musique c'est quand meme tres AGREABLE °°° gros bisous

Hi Tim! This is for a very noble & sentimental cause which I fully support. I still pine for the heyday of vinyl myself. And am so glad that Strangeland is being released in vinyl format. I hope that the single releases will be too, with a box set to collect please! Record shops don't have to fade away & die with the advent of downloading music. Surely there is enough people who still like to have something tangible in their hands that they have spent their hard-earned cash on (with Dr/Cr card ;P) whether it be vinyl or cd. Or maybe I'm just an old fart.. Hope to be there! Ange xxxx
